If you haven't already read it on Danessa's blog...I am officially a member of The League of Therapists! I went to a supervision meeting today where some of the staff presented videotapes of their sessions, giving background, and then asking for advice and feedback. Everyone seemed like they really were close and there was a lot of laughter, openness, safety, and growth. They also get together every now and then for potlucks! If I didn't know any better, I would assume they were Baptist!
It will be a great place for me to grow personally as well as professionally...even allowing me free supervision hours if I want to become a LPC. I also start Monday, so there is virtually no waiting around. This is my first real job and it is pretty awesome and nerve racking all at the same time! On top of all of that, Danessa and I get to stay in our house because we can continue to pay rent! Yey! Seriously though, I am very excited about this chance to grow, learn, and put into practice what I have been taught for the past 6.5 yrs (not including hs)

We're all Colored Peppers...
I have come up with a pretty awesome way to talk to people about diversity. What you do is take a red bell pepper and a green bell pepper. Cut up some of it so that it can be eaten. Have a person close their eyes (or blindfold them if necessary) and eat a bite of the red and green pepper. Ask them if it tastes, feels, or smells different. When they say no, or that it is hard to tell, have them see the pepper and talk about how everything about the two are similar, the only difference being the pigment of the outside.* The structure of the inside as well as all the other characteristics are the same. Having variations allows for greater spice in life!

Hey, I know that guy....
The mind works in mysterious ways, that is for sure. Have you ever noticed that you often think you see someone you know, but it's really a stranger? For example...the pastor of the church that we are going to, First Baptist, has a head pastor that reminds me of my cousin Lige. There is a guy in our Sunday School class that reminds us of a guy that worked at Berea College and we even saw a guy walking last night that reminded us of a student that went to Berea.
Humans are social beings and we require touch and contact from others. If we are in a place where we feel like we are alone, we have a tendency to find familiar faces. What can provide more comfort than seeing the faces of those who we know and love spending time with? I think that we recognize traits in people, whether by their face, way they walk, or clothes they wear, that remind us of people from a place where we feel welcomed, wanted, and comfortable. We use these "comfortable strangers" to feel safe until we are able to develop a social network of our own in our new place. Gotta love how the mind keeps itself from going crazy!

That's how I roll
I have realized that I have a problem. Since the first step is to admit that problem, here it goes...
I am an achievement hoarder.
Basically, the Xbox 360 requires that each game have a gamerscore of 1000 and some can have more with downloadable content, like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance which has 1250 and Halo 3 which is up to 1750. The achievements unlock when certain goals are met in the game, like beating certain levels or unlocking characters and the such. I have realized that once my Xbox was fixed, I became hooked on getting a higher gamerscore...which is indicated on the Gamer Score card on the left on my blog...though it's not up to date since I don't have an internet connection for my Xbox right now.
Anyway...when I got my box back, tried to recover my Gamer Tag, failed, and lost all of my old gamerscore, I was determined to come back better and stronger than before! I will give you an example of my problem...
A game that I am playing a lot recently is Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Great game, by the way. One of the achievements is "Dressed for Success" and it involves unlocking all of the costumes for every character in the game. Let me tell you how that came about. There are 25 characters you can play in the game plus 8 that I got from downloadable content, so a total of 33. Each have 4 costumes, that's 132. In order for me to unlock the costumes, I have to play a specific level with the character and if I beat it with a certain score, I get a costume. After that, I have to kill a set number of people, usually 175 to get the remaining 3 costumes that the level did not unlock. For me to fight people, I have to live, so I have to increase the defense of each character, which costs money. There are 9 slots to increase Defense and it costs 1000 gold for the 1st, 2000 for the 2nd, 3000 for 3rd...and so on. That means I have to find 45,000 gold for each character to build up their costume. Yikes. All in all, I gathered roughly 1,485,000 gold and killed roughly 6,375 bad guys;
just for this little message to pop up. God bless my wife for putting up with it!
And my current Gamerscore, as of 9:30 pm on 2-8-09 is 7280. Just FYI.

Karate Chop Sandwich
I'm going to start by making an obvious statement: Chuck Norris is like Jesus.
Now that that is out of the way, let me explain in greater detail...
Chuck Norris has a "hit" t.v. show called Walker: Texas Ranger where he fights all sorts of enemies and villains that appear on his home turf. Every time that evil struts into the Lone Star State, Norris is there to put an end to their evil schemes. However difficult the situation becomes and regardless of how beat up Norris gets, he always comes out on top. Do you know why? Not the obvious answer of the awesomeness of Chuck Norris...who fought the city of Atlantis and won...but because it's his show. The writers wouldn't allow Norris to lose...the American people couldn't stand to see that happen either!
And that is how Norris is like Jesus.
Despite all of the persecution, injustice, mockery, abuse, ridicule, and death that followed Christ, it was and is only a minor set back...as we saw with his death which was followed by his resurrection 3 days later. In the end, Christ will deliver some karate chop sandwiches to Satan and his minions, the like of which Chuck Norris was never seen. In the end, Christ will win because the writer of the Universe would not have it any other way.

Single Tear
I have made the greatest discovery yesterday!
The first time we went to a library to actually check out books, I was looking on their computer to see if they had some books I wanted, Like Odd Hours, a Tesla biography, or more Halo novels. So I type in "Halo" into the search and Halo 3 pops up as an "electronic resource." This boggles my mind because I know that Halo 3 in electronic form can only be the video game...and as I look more, I can see that it is listed as "xbox 360." My mind is racing at the possibilities at this point and I start looking around me in the library to see if I can find any video games. Unfortunately, my time was running short so I had to abort the search there.
I get back home and start reading my book "Roma", which is a fictional account of Rome...very awesome. Time passes and I realize in my almost infinite amount of free time that I should look again, so I type in Halo 3 and see the same results, that the game is checked out. However, I am still thinking that that might be because they have a teen night where they have 4 or so games going on the different consoles that people can play, so I'm thinking that is what the game is doing there and in the system. To give it a test some, I pull up my list of 360 games I want to play (yeah, I know, whatever) and enter in "Bad Company" and it pops up! I try some other games with no luck and then just enter in xbox 360. 20-something games appear and now I have the name of the library where they are at...the one closest to me! YES! A single tear welled up in my eye at that moment. The library that is closest to our house has video games for the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360! And good games too! Wii Music, Smash Bros, Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed...awesome games! Yes!! Take that blockbuster!! and free time!

Super bowl Commericals
The Super bowl was one of the best I had seen in a long time, even though the team I was rooting for didn't win. Either way, it was a great game and kept me on the edge of my seat for a lot of it, which is pretty awesome. Apart from the game, there were some awesome commercials and some stupid ones. I wanted to share the ones that I thought were the best.
I'm pretty sure I could relate to just about every one of those points when I worked during seminary at a certain unnamed location...ahem...anyway...when the koala gets punched, I lose it every time.

What's in your bucket?
So, Danessa talked me into making a blog. I don't know how often I'll post stuff, but I'm going to give it a go for a bit and see what happens.
Well, today in Sunday School, the teacher mentioned something that the pastor had said that I thought was awesome. He said that each person carries two buckets...one is full of water and the other is full of gas. When a disagreement, or spark, ignites we each have the option to throw on the spark water or gas. I thought that was pretty accurate by itself, but then he went on to say that the deacons should each be carrying two buckets of water. The church leadership...or any leadership, for that matter, needs to stick together through thick and thin. There can be disagreements, but they should be dealt within the leadership and not taken outside of that.
What is also interesting is that some people carry two buckets of gas and use them often (which would be expensive) just to see the flame. So, the question remains...what's in your bucket?
